After The Deadline: Calgary Flames

Before the deadline the Flames made 2 trades:
Flames acquired Michael Stone from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a third round pick and conditional 5th round pick.
Flames also acquired Curtis Lazar and Mike Kostka from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Jyrki Jokipakka and a second round pick.

The Michael Stone trade has worked out very well for the Flames, Michael Stone in 5 games with the Flames has 2 assists and is a plus 4, the flames have also won every game with him in the lineup. He was traded to be a rental, but if he keeps playing like he has recently it would be smart to extend him. The Flames gave up a third round pick, which is not worth that much considering this years draft class is pretty weak. Overall great trade for the Flames.

The Curtis Lazar trade was made about half an hour until the deadline. The Flames acquired Curtis Lazar who has struggled this year with the Senators, he has a lone assist in 33 games played and is a minus 10 on the season. Lazar had 6 goals, 14 assists for 20 points in 76 games last year. Now I know those aren't great numbers, but the Flames are getting a young fast forward with potential to be very good and dangerous. The Flames are giving up a second round pick, also not as much value because of the weak draft. They are also giving up Jyrki Jokipakka. Jokipakka had 1 goal, 5 assists in 38 games this year, He had 6 points in 18 games last year. Many Flames fans were disappointed he did not work out. Jokipakka was part of the Kris Russel trade, and when he was acquired people thought he could possibly be a top 4 Dman and have an established role on the team. He had just cleared waivers before he was traded. Overall the Flames are getting a young player with potential to be very good and he is very fast and smart with the puck. Many people think Lazar just needed a change in scenery to get back to his old self, and I think that is exactly what the former first round pick needed. Hopefully things work out with him.

What they didn't do: For a while the Flames were rumored of getting a top 6 forward and possibly a different goalie. That changed a lot in the last week. Michael Ferland was moved up to the top line and that line has been on fire since. They were also rumored about goalies, but with the emergence of Brian Elliott those rumors stopped as he has been lights out recently, going 8-1-1 in his last 10 starts. The Flames have won 5 straight, 6-0-1 in there last 7 games. I think it was smart for them to not do much at the deadline.
